The Pintelah Yid and Chanukah

Rabbi Elie Karfunkel

Why do I love Chanukah? It is because the battle of the Maccabi’s was not just a battle against the Greeks, but it was something much greater. At the time of Chanukah, as in our times, the real battle taking place was over the soul of every Jew. Who we were and how we defined ourselves in relation to our Host culture. This is actually a never ending battle. During the time of the Maccabees our Jewish souls won. We won because in each and every Jewish soul there is a Pintelah Yid. A Pintelah Yid is the indestructible Jewish force that is at the epicenter of every Jews neshama. It is the part of the soul in all of us that says "I am not defined by my own particular talents and interests, but by my yearning to do Hashem’s will and be his Ambassador." My friends, this is the real victory of Chanukah, and every year I get the sense that the Pintelah Yid comes out in all of us. This why I love Chanukah. Stay Jewish, Live Jewish, Happy Chanukah!
