What is the Forest Hill Jewish Centre?
The Forest Hill Jewish Centre is a sanctuary of warmth and caring- where Rabbis know members’ names and get involved in their lives. FHJC is a place where people learn to laugh and at the same time, take their spiritual growth seriously. Every person is encouraged to grow through participating in acts of kindness in the wider community – to be a knowledgeable Jew and a master mensch.

In 1995, The Forest Hill Jewish Centre began in The Village as Ohr Somayach Jewish Learning Exchange. Under the guidance and vision of Rabbi Nota Schiller, the Dean of Ohr Somayach International, the JLE was supported by Albert Latner and his family, in memory of his dear wife, Temmy.

The JLE functioned as a learning centre until 2000, when Rabbi Elie and Rifky Karfunkel moved into the neighbourhood to assume leadership of the Forest Hill Jewish Centre.

Now an unparalleled success, the Forest Hill Jewish Centre brings spirituality and a sense of community to the Jewish residents of Forest Hill.

Spirituality, Learning, Connection
Shabbat services each week incorporate a wide range of activities. Whether it be kids programs, the Rabbi’s famous sermons or the illuminating scholar in residence weekends. FHJC connects your family with vibrant, relevant Judaism that is as fun as it is informative. Classes and lectures focusing on all elements of Judaism are a mainstay of the Centre, and topics, such as Jewish history and philosophy, are related in a style that make them accessible to anyone who wants to reinforce their personal link to Jewish tradition.

Holidays are a focal point with each significant day on the Jewish calendar accentuated with special activities. Personal milestones are similarly marked with everyone in the community taking part in the celebration.

The common thread throughout all of the Centre’s activities is that it is a place where people feel cared for, included and encouraged to grow at their own pace.
